Aspect Ratio

Aspect ratio is the ratio of an image's width to its height, expressed as two numbers such as 16:9, 1:1, or 9:16, which fixes the shape of the frame independent of its pixel size.

Aspect ratio is the proportional relationship between an image's width and height, written as a pair of numbers such as 16:9, 1:1, or 9:16.

How it works

An aspect ratio describes shape, not size. The notation W:H states how many units of width correspond to a given number of units of height. A 16:9 frame is wider than it is tall (landscape); a 9:16 frame is taller than it is wide (portrait); 1:1 is a perfect square. Because the ratio is independent of resolution, the same 16:9 shape can be a small 1280×720 image or a large 3840×2160 one — both reduce to 16:9.

In AI image generation, you choose the aspect ratio before the model renders, because it determines the dimensions of the canvas the model composes within. The model arranges the subject, framing, and background to fit that shape, so a portrait prompt and a landscape prompt with identical wording can produce noticeably different compositions.

Why it matters

Each destination accepts a frame and may crop media that does not fit. Wide, tall and square ratios influence composition, but platform specifications change. Confirm current dimensions, safe areas and cropping behavior before production. Picking the shape up front reduces the chance of cutting off faces, logos, text or key details.

Ratio, resolution, and orientation

  • Aspect ratio describes width relative to height.
  • Resolution describes pixel dimensions, such as 1920×1080.
  • Orientation describes landscape, portrait, or square.

Two files can share a ratio and have very different detail. Cropping removes pixels, stretching distorts the image, and outpainting creates new content that must be reviewed.

In kublaro

In kublaro, choose the ratio before generation using the destination as the starting point, keep text and logos inside a safe area, and preview the result in its final channel. Available resolutions and formats depend on the selected model and workflow; choosing 1:1 or 16:9 alone does not guarantee dimensions or quality.

Frequently asked questions

What does aspect ratio mean in AI image generation?+

It is the width-to-height ratio of the output you ask the model to produce. Setting it before you generate tells the model the shape of the canvas to fill — square, landscape, or portrait.

What is the best aspect ratio for social media?+

There is no permanent best ratio. 1:1 is square, 4:5 is portrait, 9:16 is tall vertical and 16:9 is landscape. Check the destination's current dimensions, safe areas and cropping behavior before production.

Does changing aspect ratio change image quality?+

Aspect ratio is not a quality measure, but changing shape by cropping removes pixels and expanding a frame requires resampling or generated content. Compare pixel dimensions, total pixels and model limits as well as the ratio.

Can I change aspect ratio after generating an image?+

You can crop to a tighter ratio, but widening the frame means adding new content. The cleanest result comes from setting the right aspect ratio before you generate.

What does a square aspect ratio mean?+

It means 1:1: width and height use the same number of units. 1024×1024 and 2048×2048 are both square but have different resolutions. Square describes shape, not sharpness.

How do I calculate an image's aspect ratio?+

Divide width and height by their greatest common divisor. For 1920×1080, divide both values by 120 to get 16:9.
